The Arts in Jewish Culture
Jewish life is very much the life of a community and a lot of Jewish religious life is based around the home and family activities. Since Biblical times, Jewish people have expressed themselves through art such as mosaics, sculpture and architecture. Dance has also played a major role in Jewish culture from the earliest of times. In the Old Testament dance is described with enthusiastic and uplifting words such as "Jumping", "leaping" and "whirling" and many dances are associated with Jewish ritual, like the Hora circle dance enjoyed at weddings and other happy occasions.
Drama, Storytelling & Dance
We run popular workshops with drama specialists who are able to bring to life the lives and ceremonies celebrated by Jews using drama and some dance.
Art
Alternatively another very popular workshop celebrates the imagery found in Jewish art using colourful felt making to create a wall hanging or for longer projects, the art of mosaic making. Again we would be happy to discuss the options available to you.
All of our workshops are designed to provide a valuable window into the lives and celebrations of Jews and can be adapted for all ages and abilities including SEN.
The Benefits
These workshops aim to support and enrich your pupils' learning by helping to:
- Engage, Educate and Inspire: through dance, music, art or drama, pupils will have the opportunity to work with an artist from a particular cultural and religious background
- Develop Self Awareness: pupils are exposed to information about their own culture and other cultures which they may not have otherwise contemplated
- Break Down Cultural Barriers: by challenging preconceptions, prejudices and stereotypes that obstruct our understanding of other people
- Build Trust: allowing for greater cooperation and a more productive environment
- Develop Interpersonal Skills: by learning about the influence of culture, i.e. the hidden factors upon people's behaviour, pupils will develop a greater understanding and sensitivity towards people which may have previously been lacking
