Bhangra Dance

Bhangra Dance (and music) and Gidha Dance are two forms of indigenous folk dancing from the Punjab (the home of Sikhism) which have been appropriated, adapted and pioneered by Punjabi Sikhs. Punjabi Sikhs have championed these forms of expression all over the world to such an extent that Sikh culture has become inextricably linked to Bhangra even though Bhangra is not a Sikh institution but a Punjabi one.

We have charismatic and talented dancers on our team who through discussion and dance, are able to lead workshops which explore Sikhism or a particular festival or ceremony. They will wear some traditional dress and bring with them photographs and things for your pupils to look at to further enrich their experience and answer any questions which your pupils may wish to raise.

Drumming & Percussion

In addition we have charismatic Bhangra Dhol drummers who run uplifting and engaging drumming workshops and provide a valuable window into the lives and celebrations of Sikhs and explain the importance of Bhangra Dhol drumming to their culture.

All of our workshops are designed to provide a valuable window into the lives and celebrations of Sikhs and can be adapted for all ages and abilities including SEN.

The Benefits

These workshops aim to support and enrich your pupils' learning by helping to:

  • Engage, Educate and Inspire: through dance, music, art or drama, pupils will have the opportunity to work with an artist from a particular cultural and religious background
  • Develop Self Awareness: pupils are exposed to information about their own culture and other cultures which they may not have otherwise contemplated
  • Break Down Cultural Barriers: by challenging preconceptions, prejudices and stereotypes that obstruct our understanding of other people
  • Build Trust: allowing for greater cooperation and a more productive environment
  • Develop Interpersonal Skills: by learning about the influence of culture, i.e. the hidden factors upon people's behaviour, pupils will develop a greater understanding and sensitivity towards people which may have previously been lacking
