Chinese dance has a history over 4,500 years old and falls into two main categories: Classical dance and Folk dance. Traditionally Chinese dance was rooted at all levels of society and was practised by farmers, emperors, and warriors alike.

Classical fan dances include the traditional Han fan dances which were performed in the courts of ancient China. These dances were often based on traditional stories or poetry and the fan, as well as other props, were used as part of the dance. Folk-oriented fan dances are quite often performed simply for their grace and visual beauty whilst Kung fu fan dances are often woven into fighting styles where heavier fans are used as weapons.

Participants learn and perform fan dances to traditional Chinese music and, if so desired, the sessions can be linked to Chinese New Year or other important festival.

We have a small and talented team of dance artists from China all of whom are trained in Classical and Folk styles. Some are trained in contemporary ballet as well. They are all talented teachers, experienced in working with pupils of all ages and abilities and speak with great knowledge about the origins of their art form.

About Our Workshops

• Chinese Fan Dance workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities and SEN
• They are fun, inspirational, educational and celebrate diversity and promote unity
• We can take up to 30 pupils in each session
• Session lengths range from 30 minutes to an hour (or more) depending upon the age of the pupils participating and your desired outcome
• Workshop content is adapted depending on the age and experience of those participating
• These workshops also aim to teach pupils about Chinese culture and the origins of the dance
• Workshops can lead to an informal showing or a larger production or performance if you so wish and can be linked to a festival such as Chinese New Year
• Fans can be hired for a small daily fee
