Bhangra Dance

Bhangra is a lively form of music and dance, traditionally used to celebrate harvest, that originated in the Punjab region in Southeast Asia. Bhangra dance itself is a couplet form of dance. The woman traditionally wears a Salwar Kameez and the man a Punjabi suit with a wonderful colorful turban. The steps are mostly identical with the woman mirroring the man’s steps. Bhangra dance was originally performed to celebrate the harvest season yet, over time, it became part of day to day life and was used in such diverse occasions as weddings and New Year celebrations and other important occasions.

During the last thirty years, Bhangra has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide, both in traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hip-hop, house, and reggae. As Bhangra continues to move into mainstream culture an understanding of its history and tradition helps in our appreciation of it and its remarkable history.

Wise Moves has a team of Bhangra Dancers who teach their craft with great skill, enthusiasm and knowledge.
