Africa is the cradle of nearly all the rhythms played around the world today. The most culturally distinct drum to Africa is the Djembe ("jem-bay") drum which originated over 200 years ago in Guinea, West Africa. It is often referred to as the healing drum and is considered to have magical powers which can transport you into other worlds when played by master drummers.
The drum beat is heard every day in Africa. Drums are used in healing ceremonies, naming ceremonies, in rites of passage and warrior rituals as well as on social occasions like weddings, or harvest parties or to celebrate the rain after a drought.
We have a national team of percussionists (African and white European), all of whom are talented African drummers and teachers, experienced in working with pupils of all ages and abilities.
About Our Workshops
African Drumming workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities and SEN
They are fun, inspirational, educational and celebrate diversity and promote unity
We can take up to 30 pupils in each session
Session lengths range from 30 minutes to an hour (or more) depending upon the age of the pupils participating and your desired outcome
Through a conducted drum circle pupils learn how to play the Djembe through call and response patterns led by our artist
Cues (which can be verbal or non-verbal) are directed at the pupils who respond in unison to the master drummer
Workshop content is adapted depending on the age and experience of those participating and can increase in complexity for the more experienced drummers
These workshops also aim to teach pupils about African culture and the origins and importance of the African Drum in their day to day lives
Workshops can lead to a showing or performance if you so wish
