African Singing

Ancient writing traditions do exist on the African continent but today, as in the past, most African art forms are oral rather than literary. Music was first created as a form of communication  and over time became a unifying and exciting way of bringing people together to share stories about African culture, their history, myths, religion and philosophies as well as celebrate and mark major milestones in the life of an individual.

Today there are literally hundreds of African songs that celebrate everything from childbirth to the coming of age and marriage as well as things like the changing of the seasons or hunting. Songs are also traditionally sung to scare off evil spirits and to pay homage to deceased ancestors.

We have a national team of African Singers (African and European) who are experienced in working with pupils of all ages and abilities.

About Our Workshops

  • African Singing workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities and SEN
  • They are fun, inspirational, educational and celebrate diversity and promote unity
  • We can take up to 30 pupils in each session (or more if pre-arranged)
  • Session lengths range from 30 minutes to an hour (or more) depending upon the age of the pupils participating and your desired outcome
  • Pupils learn about African songs and how to sing them
  • They explore using the voice in rhythmic patterns through call and response techniques
  • For the more experienced, the use of harmony is covered and pupils learn how to create their own interpretations of the material through improvisation
  • Workshop content is always adapted depending on the age and experience of those participating
  • These workshops also aim to teach pupils about African culture and the origins and importance of African Singing in their day to day lives
  • Workshops can lead to a showing or performance if you so wish
