The tabla is an Indian percussion instrument which dates back to the times of Persian Muslims and is used in the classical, popular and devotional music of the Indian subcontinent and in Hindustani classical music. Today it is adding its flavour to all kinds of music genres, especially jazz.
The tabla consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting size and timbre: the dayan (right hand drum) which is almost always made of wood and the bayan (left hand drum) which is usually made of brass or nikel or chrome plate but can also be made of iron, aluminium, copper, steel, or clay. Undoubtedly the most striking characteristic of the tabla is the large black spot on each of the playing surfaces. These black spots are a mixture of gum, soot and iron filings. Their function is to create the bell-like timbre that is characteristic of this instrument.
We have a national team of percussionists (Indian and European), all of whom are talented tabla drummers and teachers, experienced in working with pupils of all ages and abilities.
